Spanish la Liga has always been known as a two-horse race between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. However, it seems Atlético Madrid had other plans in mind this season as they look brilliant.
Compact Atlético leads halfway with 35 points
It was always going to be difficult against a stubborn Getafe team. However, Atletico Madrid got a hard-fought victory yesterday against them with a slim 1-0 victory. The goal came from former Barcelona striker Luis Suarez whose towering header in the 38th minute clinch all three points. The game which is Atletico’s last game of the year saw them sitting comfortably at the top with 35 points while Real Madrid’s draw with Eibar saw them finish second with 33 points.
Barcelona fans will be disappointed as their team ends the year 8th position after drawing at home to lowly-placed Eibar.
Diego Simeone’s team hopes to get more reinforcements in January
Atletico Madrid has always played third fiddle to Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, however, this season hopes to be different. Their summer acquisitions were a loan move for Arsenal Torreria and getting Luis Suarez from Barcelona. The loss of strong midfielder Thomas Partey was painful, but it seems his absence has not been felt as they have looked very formidable.
Just this week Big striker Diego Costa terminated his contract with them to seek greener pastures and they could be in the window to get a replacement. The management of Atletico Madrid has always stuck with the Coach due to his shrewd and effective signings. There are rumors that they will lose the Gaffer to get acquisitions that will make them title winners. Some names that peddle around are Real Madrid Isco and inter Milan Erickson.
It is believed that these creative players will add a spark to the team. Real Madrid and Barcelona will have to buckle up and spend heavily catching up with Steve and Simeone team.
